Storage Solutions ?C Falling Into Place

Author: Adriana Copaceanu
There are two major times of year when people try to get organized, the spring and the fall. They both have their own distinct needs. In the fall, it's time to clean up and store all the yard and garden tools for the winter. Like most people, we always seem to have too much stuff and not enough room. The basement is full, the garage is full, and you can't leave things sit out all winter or you'll have to invest in all new equipment.

A simple solution is a storage shed. They are reasonably priced and come in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes. There is something to suit every need. But, before purchasing a storage shed, you need to check the zoning laws where you live to see if you need a building permit. Some communities have restrictions on the color of siding or paint that can be used on houses (especially in historic towns). These may apply to storage sheds as well. In most communities, it won't be a problem, but it's always wise to check first.

Once you are ready to move forward, you need to decide how much space you will need. Lay out all the equipment you need to store, then sort it based on what needs to be stored on the floor, and what can be either hung on the wall or up on shelves. There are many storage organizers that can be added to the inside of the storage shed, just like in the house, that allow you to maximize the space.

There are a wide variety of sheds available in wood, metal and plastic sheds. The metal and plastic are less susceptible to weather damage than the wood sheds. While wood will probably look nicer, it's harder to keep pests out of it. Metal sheds will get hotter inside during the summer. There are custom built and do-it-yourself sheds as well. The do-it-yourself sheds come with step-by-step directions and really don't take a lot of experience or special tools. But, if you want to have power run to the shed, you need to hire an electrical contractor.

Another decision that needs to be made is what kind of floor (unless it is a do-it-yourself that includes a floor panel). A wood floor is the least expensive and easiest to install. But, a concrete floor will last longer and provide better protection. It's a good idea to allow for water drainage in the shed, for easy cleanup.

After a choice is made, be sure that the shed will be functional for easy access of all your equipment come spring. If it's put away organized, it will make it that much easier to get started on the yard and garden in the spring.
